Circumpolar Deep Water and Shelf Sediments Support Late Summer Microbial Iron Remineralization

چکیده

Abstract Despite widespread iron (Fe) limitation in the Southern Ocean, intense phytoplankton blooms are observed around productive coastal regions such as Mertz Polynya (off George V Land and Adelie Land, East Antarctica; 140–155°E). Sources of Fe across Antarctica vary, with limited data available for late summer months. We investigated sources dissolved (dFe; <0.2 μm) at 19 oceanographic stations Glacier Region (64–67°S; 138–154°E), between January March 2019. Concentrations dFe ranged from below detection limit (0.03 nM) surface, to 0.34 nM above base mixed layer (35 m), reaching 0.59 depth (520 m). Using features trace element ratios (manganese titanium), we identified Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) shelf sediment resuspension modified CDW contributors region over this period. Microbial remineralization was evident where nutrient‐rich water met highly oxygenated waters continental shelf. Reduced concentrations euphotic zones suggested rapid biological uptake prior sampling. proposals pelagic recycling by marine animals, preliminary investigations reveal no significant spatial relationship animal presence surface ocean study area. Further research is required identify seasonal changes supply areas which will strengthen our understanding cycle its influence on microbial primary productivity globally region.

Distribution of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water on the warming continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula

We use autonomous underwater vehicles to characterize the spatial distribution of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) on the continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and present the first near-synoptic measurements of mesoscale features (eddies) containing UCDW on the WAP. Thirty-three subsurface eddies with widths on the order of 10 km were detected during four glider deployment...

Transport of warm upper circumpolar deep water onto the Western Antarctic Peninsula Continental Shelf

continental slope. Historically, four mechanisms have been suggested (or assumed): (1) eddies shed from the ACC, (2) flow into the cross-shelf-cutting canyons with overflow onto the nominal shelf, (3) general upwelling, and (4) episodic sweeping of ACC meanders over the shelf. The mooring array showed that for the years of deployment, the dominant mechanism is eddies; upwelling may also contrib...

Microbial manganese and sulfate reduction in Black Sea shelf sediments.

The microbial ecology of anaerobic carbon oxidation processes was investigated in Black Sea shelf sediments from mid-shelf with well-oxygenated bottom water to the oxic-anoxic chemocline at the shelf-break. At all stations, organic carbon (C(org)) oxidation rates were rapidly attenuated with depth in anoxically incubated sediment. Dissimilatory Mn reduction was the most important terminal elect...

Metagenetic community analysis of microbial eukaryotes illuminates biogeographic patterns in deep-sea and shallow water sediments.

Microbial eukaryotes (nematodes, protists, fungi, etc., loosely referred to as meiofauna) are ubiquitous in marine sediments and probably play pivotal roles in maintaining ecosystem function. Although the deep-sea benthos represents one of the world's largest habitats, we lack a firm understanding of the biodiversity and community interactions amongst meiobenthic organisms in this ecosystem. Wi...
